The women’s track and field team at Waukesha West will be starting off this new spring season with a lot of fresh blood on the team.

            “Our team is very young this year,” said junior Allie Lowman. “I was surprised to see all of the new faces on the first day of practice,” she added. The girls track team is looking at this year to rebuild their team because they lost some great runners last year after they graduated.

            Not only is there a lot of new runners, there is also a new coach. Coach Kasten is the new shot put and discus coach. She makes a great addition to the team because she knows a lot about the sport. Along with Kasten, coach Danika is a relatively new coach for the sprinters. She started coaching last year and has been working hard with everyone on the team, specifically with weight lifting. Danika also leads many of the workouts and helps the rookies with techniques.

            This season will be quite the learning experience for the West wolverines. The new freshmen have some great talent like Leah Llyod. She is already on the varsity team and competed in Missouri at the Missouri relays on March 23 along with the rest of the varsity team. She helped lead the team to a 3^rd place finish in the 400 relay by achieving a time of 53.48 seconds.

             “This is all happening so fast,” Llyod said. “One week I was in spring training and the next week I found out I will be going to Missouri.” This is a great accomplishment for a freshman. Lloyd has been working very hard and wants to continue to improving.

Leah is not the only one that has a promising future on this team. The entire freshmen class has been putting in a lot of time and effort into building their speed and strength. Overall, it seems that the wolverines will have a great season full of improvements and victories. Good luck West!
