Celebrities as Role Models?

We’re all guilty of it. Perhaps you have picked up the latest gossip magazine while in line at the supermarket or tuned into entertainment tonight in awe of these celebrities with such terrible behavior that include DUIs, countless trips to rehab, and sex scandals.

Everyone should remember that celebrities are not role models; they are only famous. Just because someone is in magazines and followed around by Paparazzi does not mean that they should be worshiped and idolized.

What most don’t realize is that these famous socialites may look glamorous but their life is not exactly ideal. Some only have money and looks, and that’s what they rely on. And chances are that the typical middle class girl who looks up to Paris isn’t ever going to have her money. Since looks fade and can only get you so far, using your brains rather than your looks is a safer bet for making money. In addition, girls should also realize that they should never lower themselves to the standard of only being pretty; everyone has their own niche and some just have to search for it.

Young girls and boys should be using their brains more often and doing their very best in school. Kids should have dreams and passions, and they should also put those dreams to work. If you dream of modeling or something that truly depends on appearance, have a backup plan. This means if you want to be a supermodel, go for it, but also go to college for another passion you may have. Maybe you secretly want to become a nurse or even a novelist. Think ahead and do what you like and whatever you’re passionate about.

The bottom line is to go for your dreams, pick your heroes wisely, and be a smart girl (or boy) and not a “stupid” one. Be your own person, and don’t try and copy others. Know that bad behavior does have consequences, and while some celebrities act out and it’s portrayed as glamour, they are paying for it in other ways that we might not be aware of.

Awesome article. People should realize that there are a lot of people in society today who are much better role models than any celebrity could be. I rather look up to someone who donates to charity for the good of it, rather than someone who is paid millions of dollars to stand in front of a sign and say how much a cause means to them. Good job.

Excellent article. It has so much veracity in it. I think you've touched a topic our society of young teenagers need to become aware of. There are some excellent points here. Worldly things as you've mentioned, money-looks, can only last a while. But intellectuality is something that has a brighter and longer life-span. :) Great article.
