At-a-glance

Learning a new language can be very challenging for everyone. However, it is not only valuable, but it also has many benefits. For example, you will be able to meet people you would never know otherwise, and you will learn a lot about another country and its culture. It will open doors to many possibilities.

The first thing you should take into consideration is that it is a skill. You will not become fluent in it by memorizing words and grammar rules, but you have to understand the concepts.

Here are a few useful tips and techniques:

Tip #1: Study Everyday
It may sound obvious, but it is fundamental to study and practice the language you are learning every day. Remember, it is cumulative! Do not put it off until the weekend. So, practice it as much as you can. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect”.

Tip #2: Study out loud
This can really help you: If you read something silently, you will only practice your reading skill. However, if you read something out loud, you will practice not only your reading skill but also your pronunciation and listening skills. When you finish reading something, write a note (in the language you are learning, of course) about what you have read. By doing so, you will practice all the four skills at once.

Tip #3: Do not be afraid of making mistakes
Every language learner will make mistakes; that is very normal. We make mistakes when we speak in our own native language. Believe it or not, you will learn a lot from them. Practicing with native or fluent speakers is something extremely useful; do not lose this opportunity.

Tip #4: Learn Grammar
Grammar is the skeleton of a language. You surely do not have to be a grammar expert, but you must learn it.
There is no way to avoid it. One of the biggest mistakes a language learner can make is to study vocabulary but not grammar. They are both fundamental, and you have to study both of them.

Tip #5: Review old topics
As mentioned above, language is cumulative. The more you practice the old topics, the better you will understand the new ones.

Last but not least, have fun! It may be hard, but it is very fun, exciting and rewarding.
