BLINK IS BACK: Blink 182’s sixth studio album, Neighborhoods is released after a long hiatus. The band’s comeback record has led to a successful world tour. - Wikipedia
The band consists of drummer, Travis Barker, vocalist and bass guitarist, Mark Hoppus, and vocalist and guitarist, Tom Delange. Conflicts within the trio had caused them to take a break over the passed 8 years. However, due to two separate tragedies, the band decided to reunite. This is the first album from Blink 182 without the help of an outside record producer.
The band recorded the album at different times in separate studios which ultimately led to a delay in the release date. Constant set backs in recording caused Blink to have to cancel a European tour. In an interview regarding the album, Barker said he was “immediately inspired” by practicing and listening to old songs.
The majority of the album consists of dark lyrics regarding isolation, confusion and death. One of the songs, “After Midnight,” was written last-minute after the band cancelled their European tour. This song is similar to “I Miss You,” a track from one of Blink’s previous albums. “After Midnight” consists of lyrics such as “I can't find the best in all of this, but I'm always looking out for you 'cause you're the one I miss and it's driving me crazy,” exemplifying the struggles in toxic relationships.
San Juan Hill’s students have mixed opinions regarding their new album. While some have deemed the album as a “sell-out,” many have praised the new material.
Senior, Victoria Higgins, saw the band live and said, “Blink 182 has always had great music but their new CD is, in my opinion, their best. I went to their concert in October in Chula Vista and it was amazing! Travis on the drums was sick and the new songs allow them to showcase their talents.”
Loving the new album is also senior, Taylor Magro, claiming Neighborhoods is her favorite album of theirs, and it “rocks [her] socks off!”
In contrast to good reviews, senior, Evan Da Silva does not care for the album. He feels their previous albums “touched [him] in ways no one ever has before,” whereas Neighborhoods was not as appealing.
Despite mixed reviews, it is apparent that the release of this album has created a stir. Negative opinions have not been enough to outweigh the impact of this anticipated release.
Blink 182 released a somewhat well-produced album. Favorite tracks include “After Midnight” and “Up All Night.” Although the lyrics may be depressing, the upbeat sound is worth listening to. However, it is noticeable that they could have incorporated more of their own sound rather than conforming to what is deemed “popular” in music today.
