The question of whether or not today’s youth will keep healthy habits for life is becoming increasingly notable. Teryn Gray, a junior at San Juan Hills, is tackling this tricky predicament by exposing kids and teens to fun methods of exercise; she is part of a group planning a ‘Fit Fair’—a day-long carnival event which will feature games and activities that promote fitness. Everyone is invited.

“It’s all about having fun,” Gray said. “When people are having fun and are focusing on the game, they forget that they are exercising. We’re trying to encourage people—specifically kids—to get up and play.”

The Fit Fair is doubly beneficial; its aim is to provide an enjoyable, informative day while fundraising for Camp Scherman, a camp for the Girl Scout Council of Orange County. Gray, who has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, has much experience with ‘fun’ exercise.

“I’ve been going to Camp Scherman for 11 years and, after I finish my training, will be a counselor there,” she states proudly.  “I definitely never realized that the games we were playing were exercise—I just thought these adults were having us do embarrassing, funny things.”

“Anyone who knows Teryn knows she loves Camp Scherman,” says Chandler Ciernia, also a junior. “She is always volunteering at events and going hiking, kayaking, or sailing.”

Gray wants to implement this new idea of exercise because “kids are so absorbed in technology these days. We need to get creative with how we get them up and outside.”

Moving through various stations of activities, attendees of the Fit Fair will discover ways to keep fit while playing games that double as cardio and strength workouts.

This event will take place on February 11th, 2011 from 11am – 4pm at a to-be-announced location. For more information, email tonksscherman@gmail.com and look for more updates on the Girl Scouts of OC website.
