Charles Breaux was hospitalized after someone hit him in the back of his

head with a baseball bat.

It all happened in a parking lot where witnesses say the teenager was trying

to break up a fight.

A severe beating has postponed a local college student's coursework and not going to class may wind up costing the family hundreds of thousands of dollars.

An unusual insurance snag may put the injured teen's rehabilitation on hold.

In many ways Charles Breaux has to relearn how to live. Relearn how the brain tells the fingers to move and how to use his right hand at all. Even retraining the mouth to talk.

"I'm, I can't, uh." Breaux struggles to get words out. It's what happens when you become scarred for life.

Breaux never saw what hit him. Someone had taken a baseball bat to the back

of his head, fracturing his skull.

"I didn't know what to think," said Breaux's friend Mitchell Raybon. "I hung up the phone, threw my hat off, started crying."

Mitchell Raybon got a call about the beating that put his best friend in a coma, but it turned out this wasn't the only blow to the family.

"Our insurance was saying that he was no longer covered because he turned 19 in May," said Karla Breaux, Charles' mother. "College was out and unless he reregistered for the fall semester he wasn't covered under the plan."

Mom says there's no way her oldest son will be able to take classes that soon.

"I remember sitting there thinking, you've got to be kidding. I've never heard of such a thing," said Karla Breaux.

So with mounting medical bills, the family is turning to fundraisers, hoping other good samaritans will help out theirs, on the long road to recovery ahead.
