Graduation, it’s a time of accomplishment and satisfaction. Yet, there is some controversy under all those caps and gowns.

Every year, seniors receive announcements to send to their families informing them of the date, time and place of graduation. These little booklets are the reason why some students this year can’t stop talking.

When the 2007 announcements are opened, they read from top to bottom, displaying the names of the senior class officers, with the phrase “We proudly announce our graduation” below. This has resulted in confusion for many seniors who have received the announcements. They feel as though the “We” refers to the class officers alone and not the entire class of 2007.

“All of us are graduating. We have to send them to our families and they have no clue who [the officers] are,” senior Sam Cobert said.

“I was not there to make the decision, nor did I buy any,” Ashley Dimmer, Senior Class Vice President, said.

It is not immediately clear whose decision it was, which leaves some seniors furious and some simply shrugging their shoulders. The only other time in recent years the class officers’ names were printed in the announcements was 2005. The names and announcement were on opposite pages, which seemed to cause no confusion.

“We are all graduating as a class, not just a select few,” Sara Somers, senior, said.

“I just don’t think it as big of a deal that people make it into be. If their names are on there, they are on there,” Alex Benner, senior, said.

When the officers made the decision to put the names in the announcements, they did not consult the entire class of their opinion.

“I’m not mad, it’s just that nobody told us their names would be in there, “Kristen Weiss, senior, said.

Senior Class President Evan Kirkendall has taken this matter in his own hands and concludes that it is just a wasteful thing to think about.

“Life is too short to worry about the little things,” Kirkendall said. “When you look at the bigger picture, no one’s going to remember that our names were there. They’re going to remember that we, as a class, graduated.”
