According to ABC News, three national supermarket
operators have decided to stop buying ground beef that contains the filter
which is described as pink slime. Federal regulations say that the filter known
as “lean, finely textured beef,” meets the food safety standards. It can be
unsafe and is an unappetizing example of industrialized food production. On
Wednesday, Super Value customers mentioned that they are concerned and want it
to stop carrying products containing the filter.
Also, the Food Lion chain that’s owned by the Belgian
Delhaize Group mentioned also on Wednesday that it plans to stop carrying fresh
ground beef with either of two similar filters. Both are made with beef
trimmings left over from other cuts.
Christy Phillips-Brown is a spokeswoman. She emailed a
statement saying “companies are working with suppliers to make the change. The
company guarantees the 80% lean ground beef is already selling but doesn’t
contain any filters.”
Safeway Inc., which operates Genuardi’s and Dominicks
chains, as well as Safeway stores, said Wednesday also that it will stop
selling fresh/frozen ground beef with the filter, a low-cost additive which has been used for years. It’s made from
fatty bits of leftover meat that are heated, spun to remove any fat, compressed
in to blocks and exposed to ammonia to kill bacteria. Producers often mix the
filter into fattier meat to produce an overall leaner product and reduce their
costs.
