On May 15, Mr. Terry E. Jones, freshmen biology teacher was awarded with the Inspiration Award, which is given to selected teachers by Texas A&M University. The teachers are nominated by former students who believe that the educators have made a positive influence in their life.
Former student, Jose Alfredo Rios nominated Jones for this award. Jones not only made sure Rios get the education he needed, but also become Rios legal guardian in order for him to finish his high school education.
"I was exited. I have been teaching a very long time. Most of the time we don't know what happens to students after they graduate," Mr. Jones said.
When Jones arrived at Texas A&M he received the total red carpet treatment. He had an escort the entire time he was there and was never lost.
"They treated me as if I were the president," Jones said. "It was a wonderful day at Texas A&M."
Mr. Jones is very proud to be teaching at Galena Park High School. He takes joy in his work every day. He attends every football game and is sometimes even the announcer for the sporting events. A lot of students recognize him for his school spirit.
"Galena Park is like home. It's family," he said.
Jones beliefs is that education doesn't come from books, it comes from your surroundings and the people around you.
"When I was in school, I never let book learning get in the way of my education."
