Breaking news (and by that I mean less than a year late) from the county: those among us who are weary of their daily trek to and from school rivaling the Iditarod dog sled race in length and peril – hope, in the mountain-dew-green form of nifty, headlight-reflecting signage, is here.
Just turn left at the intersection of Mathis Ferry and Highway 17 and, as the arrow promises, you’ll soon arrive at Wando High School, a full 15 minutes before you would otherwise.
Sorry guys, its no wrinkle in time, wormhole or light-speed machine: it’s a step back to the old Wando.
Guess how long that sign has been up? Yep, since a few weeks after school started. This year. At our new facility in the middle of the wilderland.
Apparently the sign fell down, but the proverbial “they” resuscitated it. Maybe they just kinda liked the mountain dew green, despite its erroneous uselessness.
There is, however, impressive announcement of Warrior presence just before the turn onto campus as well. The only problem with these gigantic testaments to the swimming, soccer and tennis teams – state champs and doing their share of the dew – is they’re facing the wrong way for anyone coming from Mount Pleasant to see them.
So yeah, we had the fastest waterboys in the state of South Carolina in 2002, but no one can find their school.
In 2004 our girls proved their skills on the field and courts, but no one knows until they’re exiting the campus they can’t find. Hmm, problematic.
I love the signs and don’t really mind their orientation as long as another is erected to direct people traveling the other direction.
But right now, finding our alma mater is almost as hard as finding those sky blue waters.
