Ah, yes… the familiar smell of the meat department at Harris Teeter-well, at least for senior Chris Holmes.

Holmes is one of many students who uses his free time to earn a little extra spending money.

“I love working there,” Holmes said, “It’s neat, a lot of Wando students work there and it has a really cool atmosphere. I make $11.75 per hour. It’s awesome.”

Considering his beginning in the produce section for minimal pay, being a meat expert is quite a step up, but the pay increase came at a price.

“I had to train for about a month to make sure I knew what I was doing,” he said.

Then Holmes was free to start in the meat department.

“I mainly prepare the meat by trimming it, cutting it into steaks, or helping with preparing the fish,” he said.

Holmes is working 27 hour weeks, spending his Tuesdays, Thursdays and the majority of his weekends at Harris Teeter.

The need of spending money has left many students asking questions as to where to find these types of jobs.

“Many students don’t realize that they can find many jobs on the Wando web site,” guidance counselor Ashley McDonald said. “If they go to the site, they can find many part-time jobs that are willing to hire high schoolers with little or no experience.”

Junior Pamela Chakides works at Jersey Mike’s making subs to get a little spending money.

“I love the people at work, they are so fun to work with,” Chakides said. “It’s a great environment to work in.”

While she is not making what Holmes is, she still is able to pull in seven dollars per hour plus tips.

Junior Chris Schoedler decided against making money preparing food. He works at Beachtown’s Surf Shak.

“I love it, my boss is really cool and lets me pretty much make my own hours,” Schoedler said.

“If you are looking forr a job, find one that fits your personality,” McDonald said.

“If you love to be around people, then find a job that lets you interact with people. If you want a more laid back job, then find one that is a little less stressful.”
