On Saturday, April 21st, Lakewood High School held its biggest school dance of the year: Prom 2012. This year’s Prom took place at the Museum “Wings over the Rockies” near Lowry Air Force Base. Prior to this big event weeks were spent shopping for the perfect dress, thinking up creative ways to invite your date, finding the least expensive hair salons and arranging limousine rides. The theme this year was “Come Fly With Me”  which got everyone excited to see what Prom would look like. “I liked the Air and Space museum.  I thought this year’s theme was pretty great!” commented Junior Lizzy Rumhelhagen.

At the entrance to the ballroom at “Wings over the Rockies”, Lakewood’s own Christine Dimiceli photographed all groups and couples as they walked down the red carpet and stood under the arch. Inside, all upperclassmen , as well as all lucky underclassmen who got asked, checked in and walked to their assigned tables. Upon doing this, one was immediately amazed by the big open area which was filled with over sixty round tables and the huge dance floor in the background. The tables were decorated with elegant tablecloths and fancy folded napkins. As the time went by, more and more Lakewood students arrived and the room filled. The excited students took a walk around the museum, explored the numerous antique airplanes that surrounded the dance floor and took pictures of each other sitting and posing in them. The atmosphere finally got charged as the students started to recognize friends and engaged in conversations, talking about how great each other looked. At 7pm everybody was seated and the waiters started to serve the dinner. The students dined on either a vegetarian potato filled with fried vegetables or chicken with fried vegetables as classical music was played in the background.

After everyone had finished eating, the DJ started playing rap/techno/dub step music. “I was a little bit disappointed because the beat was very repetitive and it was dub step the whole night. I wish there was more diversity” remarks Senior Natalie Thomson.

A few students immediately started to race to the dance floor and the rest of them followed quickly. The night was spent with endless dancing during which students had to take little breaks in order to cool down. As the night slowly approached its end the DJ interrupted his music for a moment in order to let Mr.Castagna announce the 2012 Prom Royalty. This year’s Prom King and Queen were Alex Chen and Oliva Marin.

Prom lasted until 11pm and then many people drove back to Lakewood High School in order to attend After Prom. A big thank you goes out to everyone who was involved in planning and putting on this year’s Prom. It was a huge success and a great memory for all.
