Are
you a soda drinker? If yes, have you ever thought about what you were
drinking while you were taking a sip of that soda? According to Tom
Laskawy over half of all Americans drink soda and the average amount
consumed is four cans on a daily basis. A survey taken of forty high
school students twenty percent said they do not drink any cans of soda
per day. Thirty percent drink one can, ten percent drink two cans,
twenty percent drink three cans, fifteen percent drink four cans, and
five percent drink five cans. Many people who drink soda do not think
about the side effects that come with it; they may know it’s bad for
them, but they don’t really pay much attention to this fact. I hope
after reading this article you will think before you drink a can of
soda.
There are many serious health effects that come from drinking soda.
Soda can be linked to obesity, tooth decay, caffeine dependence, and
weakening of bones. The ingredients in a can of coke are: carbonated
water, high fructose corn syrup, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural
flavors, and caffeine. There are 140 calories, 45 miligrams of sodium,
39 grams of total carb, 39 grams of sugar, and 0 grams of protein.
Phosphoric
acid can lead to a disease called Osteoporosis, which is a disease of
the bones that increases the risk of fracture. It can also soften the
teeth and rot the enamel. The acid decreases the bodies use of calcium
which causes this weakening of our body. (www.oleda.com/oleda_tips/tips.asp?dept=48)
Caffeine can cause jitters, insomnia, high blood pressure, and many more. (www.oleda.com/oleda_tips/tips.asp?dept=48)
You can also find yourself depending on the caffeine because of the
high it gives your body. Along with caffeine, sugar has some of the same
side effects. According to www.termlifeinsurance.org/harmful-soda
twenty minutes after drinking a soda your blood sugar spikes which
causes an insulin burst. Then your liver reacts to this by turning the
sugars into fat. After forty minutes the caffeine absorption is finished
causing your pupils to dilate and your blood pressure to rise, so as a
result your liver dumps even more sugar into your bloodstream. After
forty-five minutes your body ups its dopamine production, which
stimulates the pleasure center of the brain. Also the adenosine
receptors are blocked which presents drowsiness. So in another sense
caffeine and sugar can be like a drug.
Obesity
is one of the main things to look out for when drinking soda. According
to David Gutierrez drinking one soda per day you are twenty-seven
percent more likely to be classified as overweight. Also drinking one
soda a day is the consumption of approximately thirty-nine pounds of
sugar in one year, and in every twenty ounce serving there are seventeen
teaspoons of sugar. This is all sugar that the body does not need; it
is sugar that is being turned instantly into fat. With a country that
drinks soda like it’s water, we are bound to be obese.
Be
more in tune with what you are putting into your body, you may never
realize just how harmful it can be. Read the ingredients in a can of
soda or even on any packaged meal you get. Pay attention and stay
healthy!
