The Boys Basketball team huddle before district game - Damon Tomlinson
On January 25, the Melissa boys and girls traveled to Caddo Mills to face the Foxes, winning 71-21. Melissa improved their record to 27- 0 and holds the number 1 ranking in the State!
The first quarter started well from both teams, but eventually the Cardinals got in the groove of the game. Easy transition baskets after missed shots from the Foxes led to scores and a late three pointer from Hatfield put the Cards up 17-6 after the first quarter. The second quarter was good team defense by Melissa and they pressured the offense getting steals for easy points and they continued to run the floor and they went into halftime with the lead 43-11. The third quarter the starters were taken out early and put in the younger guys and they didn’t skip a beat the team played hard defense and didn’t allow a point the whole third quarter and the score went to 54-11.
14 players got into the scorebook for the Cardinals on Tuesday. Leading scorer was Zach Helmberger with 20, Ryan Ragon 8, Ian Hatfield 7, Hondo Webb 6, Mason Hart, Hunter McGuinness, Zach Torres and Jackson Webb had 4 points each, Conner Bazis and Dakota Ellis with 3 and Blake Billings, Tomas Rangel, Sam Sweetin, and Robert Tula each with 2 points.
The Cardinals are now (7-0) in district play and will play January 28 against the Paris Chisum Mustangs in Paris. Melissa will try to continue keeping it rolling.
