On December 12, author Paulette L. Webster-Tyson came to Granger to read her book to the elementary students. The students and the author were assembled in the school library.
“Every summer I would come to Granger from San Antonio. I just love Granger because my family is from here,” said Webster-Tyson.
Webster-Tyson is the author of I Gotta Get a Nickname. The story is about a young boy coming into a new city and meeting new friends.
“This book is based on a true story. I wanted to share a positive vibe with the children and make them laugh,” said Webster-Tyson.
The visiting author is a proud African American and keeps her family tradition by writing. The author related the characters in the book to her own family.
“I am a wife and a mother of two. Writing funny stories inspired by my family is my joy,” said Webster-Tyson.
Webster-Tyson wrote the book in twenty minutes, but published it two years later.
"I enjoy writing, and I did not care that it took me two years to get the book published because I followed my dream and didn’t give up,” said Webster-Tyson.
"I am working on a book myself, and she inspired me because if she can do it, so can I," said fifth grader Ryan Pickett.
After Webster-Tyson finished reading the book to the students, everyone wanted her to give them a nickname.
“My favorite character was Boom Boom. He was funny when he bit another kid,” said kindergartner Ryder Wallace.
Webster-Tyson is working on another book. She hopes to share it not only with children but with teenagers and adults as well.
