Several Granger School students competed in the annual poetry contest hosted by the Granger school library. There were four grade divisions: 2nd-3rd grade, 4th-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade.
The top three poets received cash awards. After every poem was judged, the following poems were chosen as the best in each grade division:

Chickens
By Colby Marek
Braaawk, braaawk, braaawk
Chickens lay
Eggs in a little yellow nest of hay.
Braaawk, braaawk, braaawk
Is what they say.
Peck, peck, peck
Baby chicks peck away,
As hard as they may.
To come out and play.
Peck, peck, peck
Peep, peep, peep
Chicks come out to play,
All of the day.
Peep, peep, peep
Is what they say.
Cock-a-doodle doo
Is the roosters way,
To say good morning
And have a great day.

School
By Andrew Romero
Who invented school?
Whoever did must be a fool
Cause all I do is sleep and drool
And some kids are kind of cruel
But then again it’s kind of cool,
Because my teacher rules!

My Ranch
By Ryan Pickett
At my ranch, in the middle of the of the Chihuahuan Desert,
You may find me climbing a mountain or scaling its side,
At my ranch, in the middle of the of the Chihuahuan Desert,
You may find me hiking down a canyon or climbing up its walls,
At my ranch, in the middle of the of the Chihuahuan Desert,
You may hear the sound of a firing gun, that’ll be me shooting my first deer,
At my ranch, in the middle of the of the Chihuahuan Desert,
You may see an illegal immigrant, hiking across the Tex-Mex border,
At my ranch, in the middle of the of the Chihuahuan Desert,
You may find me watching birds or studying plants,
At my ranch, in the middle of the f the Chihuahuan Desert,
These are the things you’ll find me doing.

Goodbye Boys—Hello Girls
By Cierra Cassidy
Goodbye football players,
Hello cheerleaders.

Goodbye Boys,
Hello Girls.

Bigfoot
By Juan Hurtado
I like Bigfoot and Yeti,
Hurray for them let’s throw confetti.
It has names like Yowie and Sasquatch,
I wonder if they play games like hop-scotch.
In China they call him Yeran and in Japan he is Hibagon,
Some people will help us like the pentagon.

Annoyances
By Dalton Huebner
So annoying,
people always on my back.
Yelling and shouting,
things are never quiet.
Adults that never shut up,
listen or pay attention.
Subs and Teachers always wanting to “understand,”
trying to figure out how we tick and tock.
Parents, scolding and pushing,
yelling and fussing over grades.
There is just no end to annoyances,
and there will never be.
And its amazing that we can resist it all,
but we can’t all the time.
Eventually it will get strong enough
and destroy us from the inside out

Jason
By Justn Innes
Oh my gosh how I miss my dad
And all of the time I wish we had
I wish other children could understand
How left out I feel without this special man
I wish I could see him and hear his voice
This is what I’d have if I had a choice.

Spider Cat
By Mikayla Larremore
Rat-a-tat-tat! What was that?
His name is Scrat,
but I call him Spider Cat!
Up, up, and away is what a normal
hero would say,
but not Spider Cat,
because he is anything but that.
Instead, he lets out a meow when there
is trouble in town.
All it takes is a BOOM! POW! MEOW!
until he shoots out his web,
and then with the blink of an eye,
all crime is dead……

You Have Strayed too Long
By Brooke Griffis
You have strayed too long away from me,
Like a young tom cat on the run,
Leaving me to sing a sad song,
And remember the ones we sung
On those sunny days long ago,
We would go hand in hand,
Having fun, too young to know
Where our innocent hearts would land,
I saw you change into something bad,
Your heart hardened along the path,
Your hand slipped form mine, so sad,
My soul cries seeing your unexplained wrath,
I cry out for you to come back to me,
But compassion is one thing you now lack,
My strained efforts you choose not to see,
You have strayed too long to come back.

The Legion
By Mark Levine
March March Onward. Forward to the battle zone, to kill the enemy and protect our own
Fall in line. Hold your ground. Prepare for battle. Buckle down
Let by our brothers who run and cower. Prepare your arms this is our final hour
The enemy marches across our dead; towards our lines, prepare the men
Outnumbered, outgunned, we have our morale. The enemy knows not how
They stride forward with flanks secured, armor behind and planes a roar
We open fire, their first line falls, yet more and more march to death’s call
We stall them awhile, their tanks arrive. We fire missiles that light the sky
Their planes bear down and cut our lines. I hear the screams I wish to cry
But that is not what legionnaires do: we stand our ground, we fight for you
Our wounded yell for our help, but they fight to the gates of hell
Dismiss the dead they’ve earned their rest
All of France gasps

Lonely Love
By Jacob Bowman
The day chases the night,
But she is never to be caught.
Longing for her, the sun yearns for the moon’s love.
Only to be turned away,
Stolen by the earth, she dances.
Bright, his love for her,
Burns his hate for earth.
From the beginning of time he's shined of love
And burned with hate.
So day and night circled,
Never to be as one.
