There are many students that are certain that they are going to go to college after high school, but there are also many students who do not care about going to college for a better education. In either case, the real question is if these students really understand the purpose of a college education.

The article “What is a college education really worth?” by Naomi Schaefer Riley, presents the argument that students do not actually know why they are going to attend college. Some students believe that they will not be socially accepted if they are not admitted into a good university. They disregard the fact that college is the next step to a successful future.

“There is no compelling understanding among students of why they are there,” Riley said.

Many students see college “as an opportunity to have fun.” It is merely an expectation that society has for young adults, an expensive one that is.
Another misconception people have is that they will automatically become successful if they go to college. Sadly, it's not that simple. College requires hard work and dedication. Whether someone is attending a four-year university or vocational school, it is a person's motivation that will lead to the pursuit of happiness.

“You could be successful without going to college if you’re one in a billion. You need to go to a college to be successful. You learn independence, strength, and time management.  It’s meant for people who are willing to invest their time and explore their opportunities,” college freshman Pars Patel said.

Not only does college promote self-discovery, but it also provides the skills that students will need to become independent adults. College sets up the foundation for careers students want to pursue. As Ms. Helton says, going to college makes a person “marketable” when applying for jobs.

“The United States is a service based economy, not a production based economy. Most jobs require employees to have a college education; just having skills is not enough,” Helton said.

For those students that need more information on attending college, the counselors at school are aiding those who need help with college applications. More information can be found in the career center on the times and dates for college presentations. Furthermore, there will be a college fair at the Anaheim Convention Center on October 30. It will greatly help those who are not completely sure of what college has to offer and to learn more about their next step in life.
