While college
stresses out most high school seniors, others are worried about defending their
country. Every year you have
seniors wanting to join the armed forces right after high school to fight for
their country. People think that a lot of these seniors have no other option
but join the military but a lot of these seniors want to do something honorable
for the country and others come from a military family. I talked to three
seniors here at Vallivue two enlisting in the Marines Corps and the other in
the U.S. NAVY they all had the other options but they felt that joining the
military was something that they wanted to do.
The first senior I
interviewed was Scott Seegmiller. he is enlisted to the United States Navy. He
will be a CTN a hacker for the government because he has experience working
with computers. He decided to join the Navy to follow in his older sister’s footsteps.
Scott will be leaving to Chicago for basic training then to Pensacola, FL for
CTN school. After his eight year career in the Navy he hopes to get a job with
the Government as a hacker.
The second senior
Jesse Stockland plans to join the Marine Corps for four years to be a diesel
mechanic and work on construction equipment. As a child he always dreamed of
becoming a Marine, so now that he is graduating high school, he plans on making
that dream a reality. He is not yet enlisted but plans to do it sometime soon
and hopes to leave around September. Like any other family Jesse Stockland’s
family are worried about him joining the armed forces but support his decision.
After the Marine’s he will be attending UTI to work on motorcycles and eventually
own his own shop.
Derek Flynn the third
senior I interviewed also plans on joining the Marine Corps but unlike the
other two he will be making a career. He chose to make it a career not only for
the retirement benefits, but for the opportunity to protect and serve. His
grandfather served in the United States Navy so he felt he should also join the
military. Derek chose the Marines because he wanted to do something other than
the Army or Navy. As a Marine, Flynn decided to be infantry because he wants to
actually be part of the action and wants to be able to say that he fought for
his country. He will be leaving in August to Camp Pendleton in San Diego, Cal.
