Paying for college and university may be harder for the upcoming school year. The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is expected to vote on whether to raise tuition for community and technical colleges and state universities for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. The proposed changes come following steep increases in tuition for state higher education throughout the past several years. For the 2011-2012 school year, the University of Washington raised tuition for undergraduates 20% each year for four years; this year, the board is proposing a raise of 16% for next year. This would mean students would pay approximately $12,385 each year.
Washington State University is also facing a 16% tuition increase, meaning students would be paying $11,735 per year.
The State Board for Community and Technical Colleges will vote on increases of 14% for Evergreen College and Central Washington University, 11% for Eastern Washington University, and 16% for Western Washington University.
Another vote being raised at the meeting on May 10th is whether to raise tuition at Peninsula College by 12%, which would cause a 13% raise for full-time students and an 11% tuition raise for all part time students.
