“I had no real idea of what I wanted to do; I was inspired by random things I saw, and I just went with it and came out with this vase. My advice is don’t get discouraged while at the wheel, and do your own thing, find your own way.” - Danielle Rutherford (12)
“The reason why I choose to make a 3D sailboat is because I wanted to make something 3D, and I like sailboats; and since I was in stained glass I made my project into a 3D sail boat. I’ve made three other sailboats,Ashia Lorenz (11) this one will be my fourth. The hardest part is trying to get the sails to look right. My favorite part is seeing the end result. My advice for others is, if you have ideas go for it; don’t let yourself be limited by conventional thinking.” -Lance Alderson (12)
“The lost soldier”
“You had to transform one book into a different one. This piece is about a soldier in war. The hardest part about this piece is trying to capture the old journal look, and trying to capture the soldier’s sanity. My advice to everyone is, if you like it, do it. Be yourself with your art. Art is freedom.” -Michaela Fish (9)
“Watching I am Legend and seeing the arch is what inspired me. I saw the arch and I wanted to put it on my vase, so I did. My advice for others is just keep going until you get it right. “ -Chelsea Drake (12)
“I wanted something scary and up close and personal with an apocalyptic world behind it. The hardest part was the mouth, because I was trying to get it to look like blood and not just part of the gums. It took about seven hours for me to complete. I enjoyed the perspective the most. I entered it in the Sequim Art Show. It received a merit reward. This project was made out of chalk pastel. My advice for others is chalk pastel may not be the easiest to work with, but if you work at it, you will get something cool.” -Katelyn Roberts (12)
“Friendship is Magic”
“The assignment was to make a gargoyle of two or more animals. Since I was into My Little Pony, I decided to make my guardian animal a mix between a fierce dragon and a friendly pony. My advice to younger artists is to always ask for help. If you’re not very good in the beginning, don’t give up.” -Bethany Bond (12)
“My love for glitter is what made me decided to make self-portrait out of glitter. The hardest part of this project was the fact that I couldn’t use a paintbrush, but instead I had to use a wooden stick to spread the glue on the paper. My advice is if you have time for art classes defiantly sign up because there lots of fun.” -Lexie Pankowski (11)
“The reason why I drew this picture was because I just felt like drawing a cow, that and the fact that I love animals. The shading on this picture was the hardest. It took a couple of hours for me to complete this project. My advice is don’t rush what you’re doing.”-Ashia Lorenz (11)
“I’ve been interested with water themes as of late that’s why I decided to make a stained glass boat. The easiest part of this project was deciding what I wanted to do. The hardest part was trying to keep my patience’s throughout this; it has taken me several months to finish this. My advice for others is art can be fun, just have to be patient with it. “
-Tori Holcomb (12)
“I wanted something scary and up close and personal with an apocalyptic world behind it. The hardest part was the mouth, because I was trying to get it to look like blood and not just part of the gums. It took about seven hours for me to complete. I enjoyed the perspective the most. I entered it in the Sequim Art Student Art Show. It received a merit reward. This project was made out of chalk pastel. My advice for others is chalk pastel may not be the easiest to work with, but if you work at it, you will get something cool.”
-Katelyn Roberts (12)
“Cookies are what inspired me. The hardest part was making the cookie jar itself. The designs are what I found to be the easiest to do. I chose to do this because it seemed challenging enough to be done, and it seemed to be fun to do. I enjoyed doing this project because it was most ‘me’. My advice for everyone is do what you’re most interested in, and not what people tell you to do.”
-Anthony Brandon (12)
The Port Angeles High School art program dose amazing things. The art program sharpens the skills of young students, and pushes them to their limits to produce the best work that they could do. They allow students to practice what they are good at and become better at what they love. The art program also teaches those who are not masters and shows them how to become better. The art program is nurturing to those who are willing to learn, and rewarding to those who prove themselves as artists.
Art itself is a self-learning experience. The more one dose it the more one will learn about themselves. The art program allows students to do just that. Compared to other classes where your grade is based on knowing what others want you to know, art is graded on what you learned either about yourself or the art work itself.
