Next year in January, John Green will release a new book called The Fault in Our
Stars. This is his fourth novel, in
addition to Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, and Paper
Towns. The book is about a girl named Hazel who has terminal cancer and is
forced by her parents to attend a support group.
When the release of the book was
announced in June 2011, it went to the top of the Amazon bestseller list even
before the release date was announced. John Green promised that he’d sign all
the preordered books, which was a problem for him, since tens of thousands of
people preordered a copy, and he calculated that he would have to sign over
2,000 books a day. To help him achieve this goal, he set up a large goal
thermometer to chart his success.
He also had another problem—He
didn’t know what color to sign the preorders in. On one of his videos on
YouTube (vlogbrothers) he said, “A couple days ago I was at Target and I was in
the Sharpie aisle and I was trying to decide like which Sharpie to use for
signing these, uh, tens of thousands of books. And I had a bit of an
existential crisis, because I was like do I sign it in black Sharpie but if I
do that then they might not even think it’s real, if I do like blue or red it
might be kinda like ostentatious, if I do green they’re gonna think I’m punning
on my name!” In the
end, he took a poll, and signed the books according to the percentages of each
color.
The final cover has not been
decided yet, but John Green is letting fans submit their own covers for
consideration on a blog. The link is http://thefaultinourstarscovers.tumblr.com/
