Sports at Watkins Mill High School are on a winning streak, from the basketball and the swim teams winning divisional titles this week to indoor track now breaking school records.

Swimming coach and social studies teacher Bryan Clark said that the season is “so far so good.”  The girls are 7-0, while the boys are 6-1.  They recently won against Northwood High School and Seneca Valley High School and are going to metros today for diving and tomorrow for swimming and regionals next weekend.

Clark said that his best athletes are senior Nick Lechner and junior Kelly Lewis. He said that “Kelly Lewis is really great” at the breast stroke and that Lechner is on his way to breaking a school record.

Kelly Lewis said that she is “so proud of our team” and that she is “very excited for regionals.”

Clark added that he is “rooting for all the [WMHS] teams,” and that this year Watkins Mill is “taking a step forward” in sports.

Indoor track is currently ranked third in the county, and seventh regionally. Indoor track coach and special education teacher Termaine Belote said, “The season has been going very well.” He hopes “all indoor runners go to outdoor [track] and [the team] will win some championships.”

Senior Wylliam Yougnia won the regional championship in the 300 meter dash in the 3A West Region Indoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday.  He also recently broke a school record by running a national qualifying time, allowing him to attend the New Balance games in New York City next month and is the best sprinter on the team according to Belote. ”Overall sports at Watkins Mill are on the rise” Belote added.

Yougnia said that he feels very accomplished breaking the school record and that it is an “honor to be up there with the Watkins Mill High School track and field legends.” He is looking forward to being able to “do the same for outdoor track.”

Basketball coach and physical education teacher Jason Tringone said that the basketball team won their last seven games and that the team is “playing pretty good right now.”  But, he added, the team is still working hard in practices because it “still has room for improvement.”

Tringone said the basketball team is tied for first place in the division and that the “first step is to win the division, then do well going into the playoffs.” The teams record is currently 12-7.

Wrestling Coach Timothy Morrison said that “Although the team’s win/loss record doesn’t show this, the 2011-2012 Wolverine wrestling season has been very successful.” He added that one of the biggest highlights of the season thus far has been the win over Blair High School 46-41.

Morrison added that since a few WMHS wrestlers are ranked highly in the county, they might go to regionals. The team’s current record is 4-10. He said there are a number of opportunities to have Watkins Mill represented at the state tournament this year.

Sophomore Johnny Lam said that the wrestling season is “going pretty well. We are qualifying for regionals already.” He added that at a recent match they ‘took a beating, but all of our top wrestlers won their matches, and we still worked well as a team.”

Freshman Danielle Durjan said that the girls’ basketball season is “going by very well” and that the team is “cooperating well.” She added, “our motto is that ‘we are never satisfied.’” The team’s record is 10-9, but Durjan said that they “continue to strive for success.”
