The Gin Blossoms, Jimmy Eat World and Trik Turner all have one thing in common: they all started their careers in music with the help of local radio stations.
Radio stations such as The Edge 103.9 and The Zone 101.5 are known to recognize local talents and help to jump-start their careers although their latest rock stars, Trik Turner, just might turn out to be a one-hit-wonder when fans of their first single, “Friends and Family” purchase their self-titled CD.
“Friends and Family” is the only song on the CD that has a unique sound.
The guys of Trik Turner are obviously not afraid to touch bases on serious topics. It’s just the way in which they go about in expressing these feelings that is not their own style.
The sound of the second track, “Sacrifice,” could actually be mistaken for Linkin Park’s popular usage of rock and rap.
In fact, it’s sometimes difficult to follow the songs through the whirlwind of sounds that they have created.
One minute you’re enjoying the smooth sound and moving lyrics of “Friends and Family” and then they expose you to the emotions that are targeted toward an abusive father without any warnings or transitions.
While most albums have a central sound and purpose, it seems like Trik Turner just threw together all of the songs that they had recorded and put out the CD without spending any real time concentrating on the moods that they were taking the listener through.
Most of the songs deal with serious situations such as abusive fathers, religion, death and, of course, friends and family who have been there for the long haul. The lyrics are there; they’re just not backed up by the music.
Considering the fact that it’s their debut album, they made a visible effort to gain popularity among rock fans. They just didn’t give 110%, and it shows when you listen to the CD.
