With the winter in full blast the wrestling season is finally started and is looking very good for the Farmers. Wheat Ridge has had three matches this season and already have a confernce game under their belt. The season started with the conference clash against the Valor Christian Eagles. It was a very close match, but in the end the Farmers grabbed the win by a score of 40-39. Ian Murchison was a great help with the Farmers win and has been nominated player of the week by max preps who said, “Ian helped ignite the Farmers to a win over Valor Christian by his varsity win!” That victory was soon followed by a loss to golden and a loss to Yuma. Even with a few losses, the Farmers seem to be off to a great start this season.
The Farmers' expectations to do great this season are definitely a result of the great varsity wrestlers they have on the team. Senior wrestler Nick Swanson has been an immense help to the team year after year since 2009. In '09 Swanson came in fourth place then for the following two years he took the state championship. DJ Shippley has also helped the team a lot and has been a state championship qualifier in past years.
With not a whole lot of wrestling completed and a lot more to go the Farmers will need to wait for some more action to happen before they can decide whether or not they will have a winning season or not. The hopes are up and expectations are high; it is only a matter of time until we find out how good our wrestling team is this season.
