All six sets of bleachers were filled with about 80 to 90 people, families and students yelling from the crowd. Teachers, staff and administrators also attended the powder puff game last Friday to support the girls who participated. “I want to know why we don’t do things like this more often,” said Principal Bill Parks. The game started off with timid movements and fumbles, but the seniors soon became aggressive after they scored the first touchdown. Flags were being grabbed left and right as some girls juked and twisted in attempt to score. There was also a touch of sass throughout the game. Sophomore Davante Harris was really impressed. “This game is dope,” he said. Yet there was another twist to the game: the male cheerleaders. During halftime, they performed to “You’re a Jerk” by New Boyz. Their choreography and flips, which they practiced all week, raised the energy level of both the players and fans. “It was pretty awesome! I think it’s good they brought it back,” said junior cheerleader Paul Rebultan. It was evident other cheerleaders, like Rebultan, were committed to their rather feminine roles. They painted their bodies with brown and gold paint to show support of friends on the field. “I was embarrassed at first but when you get out there and the crowd cheers you on, it’s fun,” said senior Ray Williams. As the game went on, the plays grew more intense, the passes were completed more often and the flags were pulled with more force. Overall most female athletes said they felt good about the whole experience. “It was really good,” said Kathleen Rouppet, junior. “I’ve been waiting to have the game because other schools do.” Rouppet’s soccer and powder puff teammate Kaylyn Johnson was also excited for the event mostly because she helped plan it in her ASB class. In the “third and fourth quarter, we knew we had to play hard and stop them from scoring. It was competitive but overall a good experience.” Even though the seniors defeated the juniors 24-0, the game was definitely competitive and both teams received more than scrapes and bruises. They were able to experience something fun before graduation. “This is probably the most memorable part of the year. I got to meet new girls,” said senior Alyssa Magana. Parks too felt good about the game. He was pleased students were able to get together without any problems and he would definitely like to see something like this happen again.
