Dr. Modesto Guzman, the Director of the Postal Service in the Dominican Republic, along with a few special guests visited MAST@Homestead on Friday, September 02, 2011. During his visit he discussed the importance of our school and the continuation of our tremendous work.
Dr. Guzman heard about our medical magnet program by speaking with the mother of sophomore, Karla Quinones. Dr. Guzman is her mother’s best friend. When he heard about our school, he was intrigued therefore he decided to visit.
A few students provided our guests with a tour of the facility. During the tour, Dr. Guzman explained that in comparison to students in the Dominican Republic, our students have a great opportunity. Although, there are kids in the Dominican Republic who are just as smart and capable, they don’t have the opportunities that the students at MAST@Homestead have. He would like for other countries to have special programs, similar to the one here at our school.
Dr. Guzman explained that he is impressed with the philosophies and teachings at this school. In addition, he reminded students to enjoy the time and privileges we are provided with. Furthermore, he provided the students with a memorable quote:
“You can never recapture your youth.”
In the future, Dr. Guzman hopes to start an exchange program. In this program students from the Dominican Republic would come to our school to learn and vise-versa. He only hopes that the Secretary of Education in the Dominican Republic will allow this in the future.
Overall, it was a wonderful visit from the Dominican Republic, the teachers enjoyed it and I am sure the students did too!
