Club Corner: Perception Magazine Embed This Article

A copy of Perception from the 2006-2007 school year
Roosevelt High School has so many co-curricular activities and opportunities for students that they are easy to miss. The Colonel’s Club Corner plans to take a look at some of the fun and exciting clubs offered here at RHS. One of these clubs is Perception Magazine, a self-published literary magazine.

In addition to publishing the literary magazine, Perception also holds “writer’s circles.” A writer’s circle is an opportunity for authors to peer edit one another’s work or find inspiration to write something new. Of course, it also provides a chance to sit and listen to other people’s literary efforts. The circles are held every Wednesday along with the magazine’s normal meetings. Anyone interested in art, literature or creative writing is encouraged to attend.

The Colonel interviewed English Teacher and Club Advisor Cathy Cikra to learn more about Perception.

The Colonel: What is Perception?

Cathy Cikra: Perception is the school’s literary magazine, or creative arts magazine because we also take artwork

and photography.

TC: How often does it come out?

CC: Best-case scenario, twice a year, but we try to do it minimally once a year, usually a fall issue and a spring issue.

TC: What submissions are accepted?

CC: Usually imaginative literature, poems, short stories, artwork.

TC: How do you submit your work?

CC: Kids put it in my mailbox or give it to me personally.

TC: Who is involved with it?

CC: A group of junior girls.

TC: When are the meetings?

CC: Wednesdays after school, room 201

TC: How do you join Perception?

CC: Anyone who is interested, but we don’t usually need a huge staff. We are mostly in need of submissions.

TC: How do you get a copy?

CC: It’s free and kids can get it during lunch time.
