Misconceptions of Christianity
Advertising
While it is scientifically valid that the existence of God can neither be proved nor disproved, many people still deem His existence illogical. This article is not to refute arguments against God’s existence, but rather to confront the ignorance that exists when it comes to Christianity, the primary belief system that connects to God. It honestly breaks my heart how some people view Christianity as a condemning cult. Misconceptions naturally exist in our society, but some of the misconceptions in regard to Christians is that they are “close-minded,” “cruel” and “unreasonable” in their belief. It’s absurd to judge a belief system by the actions of people who self-associate with it but do not actually follow it.

First of all, I would like to state that not everyone who claims to be Christian actually is. 1 John 4:19-21 and James 1:26 portray this perfectly. I encourage anyone to look up those verses on his or her own time. Despite what one has been taught about God and Christianity by the hateful crimes committed by Westboro Baptist Church, God is love, and hence the core of Christianity is love. There are multiple verses in the Bible that support this, such as 1 John 4:7, John 13:34, John 15:12-14, 1 John 4:19-21 and 1 Corinthians 16:14. Jesus Christ was a documented figure of history—we can all agree on this—and He claimed to be the Son of God. Jesus also happened to be a really cool guy (seriously, look it up). Guess what? The Bible supports that He was an exact representation of God (John 12:45 and John 14:9, for example). As a result, one can only concur that the logic of God being love lines up.

With the clarification of true Christianity being established, I always think it’s ironic when someone says, “You should be more open-minded.” Is it really not implied—and thus such a shock—that Christians reject other faith systems as valid and true? Christians are not the only ones who, in asserting their faith in something, reject other conflicting views. It only makes logical sense so to do. Why are other belief systems lauded as culturally diverse and acceptable, while Christians are picked on for exclusivity? People who hold a belief as ultimate truth but concede that it’s not ultimately the truth do not take their beliefs very seriously, do not take themselves seriously or are sorely mistaken about the soundness of their logic.
The Crusades is something people love to drag up as evidence that Christianity is violent and cruel. Know that Christians do not concede that those people were right in slaughtering others for their beliefs. That would be like saying all Arabs concede that suicide bombing is okay. Again, perhaps some Christians have been suffocating others, but that’s their problem, not the problem of something they wield as a tool to justify their actions. True Christianity frees people, not smothers them.

To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek of “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist” argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. This book compiles all of the substantial evidence and historical documents that support not only the Bible, but the concept of Christianity itself.
