Main office secretary at Roosevelt High School, Muriel “Sam” Edwards is being inducted into the Kent City Schools Hall of Fame Saturday April 28th.

For the past thirty-eight years she has contributed to Roosevelt, and has been a ticket taker for school events for twenty six of them.

Known as the “voice of the Rough Riders, she is known for her “undying loyalty, and spirit of commitment to serving students here and their families,” guidance counselor Nancy Bubenzer said.

Each inductee is voted on by a committee made up of Roosevelt Alumni, and school leaders such as Kent City Schools Superintendent Joe Giancola, longtime football coach John Nemec, and Activities Coordinator Heidi Myers. The committee is divided into six sub-categories.
Edwards has been nominated for the “Special Honorary Achievement Award” which is lead by Heidi Myers,Benjamin Dunlap, and Jaquie Peoples-Dukes. For this specific category, there were 10-15 nominees.

“As a subcategory, each of us bring two people to the large committee and the whole group votes on one to be inducted for each sub-group,” Myers said.

As a nominee, you are not out of the pool until you are inducted. Past recipients have included Robert W. Stanton, principal of Roosevelt in 1952 to 1958 who also served in the district for twenty five years, Leslie Leonard, an English teacher who passed away in 2004, Leroy Peoples, who graduated from Roosevelt in 1942 and was a P.E teacher for 20 years. In 2011, Emma Owen was the recipient, who was a retired activities coordinator who lost a battle to cancer this past October.

Edwards, not being a Roosevelt graduate, really exhibits how well her service has been to this school for so long.

“She is easy to talk to, you can trust her, she has an awesome sense of humor, and she’s just passionate,” assistant principal, Dennis Love said.

“She takes time to help everyone, all the visitors. She treats everyone equally,” Myers said.
Edwards is touched to be recognized by the selection committee.

“I am overwhelmed and deeply humbled. I feel honored and actually surprised,” Edwards said.
Friday April 27, a day before the actual ceremony, there will be a school assembly for juniors and seniors for Edwards’ recognition.
