Do you or anyone close to you have cancer? If so, have you heard of Relay for life? Relay for life is run by the American Cancer Society which is an organization that helps fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
College Parks Relay for Life was held on April 24 and 25 at the St. Charles soccer field. Edgewater had the most amounts of teams present during the event because of four unfortunate team dropouts, one due to a family member’s terminal illness diagnosis.
The Edgewater teams consisted of: SGA, Avid, Newspaper, Purple Cancer Eaters, and Edgewater teachers. The team with the most money raised was Newspaper with a total of $740. Avid raised $510, Teachers raised $430, Purple Cancer Eaters raised $275, and SGA raised around $250, with the total Edgewater amount being $2,205. So far, for this years relay, there has been $16,000 raised with a projected amount being $20,000. The previous year’s goal had been $40,000 but was only due to last minute sponsorship teams.
Ms. Hageman, the AVID coordinator, and English teacher here at EHS was the head of the college park relay. “Relay for Life is only one night but has the power to change the life of many cancer survivors and their caregivers.” said Ms. Hageman.
Next years’ Relay is said to be held here, at Edgewater’s track with the support of our PTSA.
