Both Edgewater and Boone High Schools have a long history of tradition and an even larger list of successful alumni. The long term rivalry that both schools share was an important factor for the Orlando Health Center for Cancer. The relationships between both teams will be extended even further when Edgewater and Boone will each don the color pink on their jerseys on May 27 in order to benefit the cancer center.
“I believe this is the first time there will be a game in Orlando that is raising money to benefit
Breast Cancer Awareness,” said Edgewater Football Coach Bill Gierke.
Both varsity teams will be playing in the football game. The game will be counted as a scrimmage in the spring season but it will be played as a real game.
Before kickoff both teams will honor local cancer survivors and people who are currently fighting cancer on the field. The Braves will be wearing pink jerseys and white numbers while the Eagles will be dressed in white jerseys with breast cancer ribbons on their helmets.
The two ranked teams will square off for a game unlike any other. Game tickets will be five dollars and so will the pink game shirts for the fans. The shirts will be available for pre-order with Mrs. Pressley. During half time there will be entertainment by Johnny Bulford and band. The game will be televised by Bright House Network.
“I think it’s an honor that Edgewater High School can play a small part in a disease that has affected so many people” said Gierke.
The game will be held at the Boone High School football Stadium at 7:30p.m. Make sure to support the cause and the Edgewater Eagles. For more information on how to get involved please contact the Edgewater Athletic Director Bryanna Rankin at 407-835-4900 extension 4906.
