Splash! Another year of water polo comes to an end, as players and fans alike are ready for more.
Although water polo’s not as popular as football, the girls and boys Coach Patty Whitted doesn’t think it matters, because water polo is more of an art than just a sport. Whitted has coached both teams at Edgewater for the last seven years.
“[Water Polo] is a very hard sport. You can only touch the ball with one hand and you can’t touch the bottom of the pool. You have to be healthy and fit to keep up with the game” said Coach Whitted.
Although the team is not known across campus and the record is not outstanding it doesn’t matter. Whitted does not think much of winning, for her this sport is all about having fun. During her years as a coach the sport has become more popular. Coach Whitted loves coaching Water Polo, as well as the teams of the sport loves playing it. Eliminating this sport would be a loss of a good opportunity for the students.
Morgan Brett, a senior, just finished her last year on the team. She’s been playing water polo since her freshman year. She had so much fun with the sport, she just kept coming back. Now she plays for herself. Her only inspiration is in her mind, when playing against another team, Brett only thinks about putting up a good front.
“I play for no one but my self, all I care about is trying.” said Brett.
