During a much-needed three-week break before and after the Christmas holiday, the Lady Pirates only scheduled one game, a visit to powerhouse Granbury, where they led virtually the whole game and held off their hosts, 51-44, behind their lethal one-two combination of center Porsha Roberts with 23 points and guard Felicity Thompson with 18.
Robets hit 10 of her 13 field goals, pulled down 10 rebounds, and blocked six shots, while Brittany Perales led La Vega with six assists and three steals to tie Thompson in that category.
In earlier action, the Baby Modocs lost, 47-26, despite 12 points from Haley Smith and eight by Brianna Sanders, while the JV lost, 45-6.
Next on the schedule for all three teams was a Jan. 4 matchup at University, as the varsity cruised to a 29-10 halftime lead and won going away, 56-36. Roberts and Thompson scored in double figures with 15 and 11 respectively with nine others in the scoring column for LV.

Opening the night was an impressive 48-36 freshmen win by the Lady Pirates, led by Donielle McLennan with 17 and Smith with 14, before the Modoc JV lost, 38-19, with all five starters scoring in single digits.

On Friday Jan. 7, the Lady Pirates opened district 19-3A at Lorena, and the varsity was upset by the #11 Lady Leopards, 51-45, despite Roberts's triple double--22 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 blocks. Her main help came from Shaimyaa Walker with nine and Thompson with eight as LV jumped out to a 15-5 lead but couldn't hold it in the second half as the hosts chipped away and went ahead in the middle of the third quarter. The Lady Pirates recovered enough to hold off the Lorena rally with a seven-point late in the third quarter before a final 12-0 spurt by the home team put it up by eight with just under two minutes left.

The Lady Leopards won the JV matchup, 60-12, and the freshmen contest as well, 41-32, despite nine points from Smith.

LV played host to Connally Jan. 10, and the varsity pulled away from a 13-11 first-quarter lead by outscoring the visitors in the second quarter, 16-5, before the Lady Cadets closed the gap in the third to 36-30. However, the hosts dominated the final stanza with a 17-6 scoring burst and won, 53-36, behind Roberts's 17 points, Thompson with 16, and Walker 10.

In the JV game, the Lady Cadets held a slim 16-12 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half to win, 34-21, while the Baby Pirates went up 9-2 after the opening tip and held up for a 34-23 victory, behind McLennan's 10 points.

All three squads continued district action at Robinson Jan. 14 and were swept by the Rockets with the eighth-ranked varsity falling behind at halftime, 20-15, then regaining the lead in the third quarter before the hosts closed out the win, 34-30, despite Roberts's 13 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.

The Rocket JV took its contest, 51-13, with Denise Anderson scoring five, and the RHS frosh dominated its game, 53-17, despite eight points by McLennan.

The three teams took the court Jan. 18, at Gatesville with the varsity regaining its winning touch, 67-43, behind Roberts's dominating performance with 29 points and eight each from Walker and Shawnequa Norwood. The JV lost, 44-25, despite 11 from Chelsi Gill and nine from DeAijha Hicks, while the Baby Modocs triumphed, 44-30, behind 13 from McLennan and 11 by Darinique Irvin.

La Vega's next opponent was China Spring at home Jan. 21 as the varsity sprinted to a 27-12 halftime lead and cruised home from there for a 44-29 win to get back on track, led in scoring by Shawnequa Norwood with 10 and Walker with nine. The Lady Pirate varsity now stands 3-2 in district and 23-4 overall.

In the JV contest, the Cougars won, 27-15, with Anderson scoring nine, while the LV frosh won, 38-35, topped by Melissa Guerrero with 16 and Destiny Roddy with 10.

The Lady Pirates entered district round two at home vs. fifth-ranked Lorena Jan. 25 and lost a squeaker to the 19-3A leader again, 36-34, on a three-pointer by Erin Sims with six seconds left. The loss was extra hard for LV because it led early, 10-4, at halftime, 21-11, and 27-23 at the end of three. Both teams exchanged the lead three times in the last four minutes, and Roberts topped the Lady Pirates again with 17 points.

The Lady Leopards took the JV game, 49-18, despite 10 points from Anderson, while the Baby Modocs edged the visitors, 20-19, behind five points from Brianna Sanders.

LV's next games will be at Connally Jan. 28 with the freshmen starting at the usual 5 p.m.
