On Friday, September 9, the Vista Grande Spartans varsity football team went head-to-head with rival Casa Grande. Over 5000 people attended the game which was held at Vista Grande High School Stadium.  Nearly 4000 of those fans bought tickets in advance. The Cougars started off with the ball after winning the coin toss.

Neither team was able to manage much offense on their opening drive.  With 4:32 left in the first quarter, Ghaleb Al-Saleh sacked Casa Grande Union’s quarterback Nick Elliott and Matthew Leija picked up the fumble running it in for a 26-yard touchdown. With no significant gains until 8:43 remaining in the second quarter, the game went into an hour-long lightning delay. Once back on the field, the Vista Grande Spartans clearly didn’t lose their spark, scoring on a 78-yard pass from Levi Durnil to Austin Myers, putting the Spartans up 12-0.

Right before halftime, James Colbert moved the Cougar chains 33 yards closer to the end zone when Taylor Walton kicked a 27 yard field goal to get the Cougars on the scoreboard at 12-3 with 4:12 remaining in the second quarter.

After halftime, with 7:08 left in the third quarter, the Cougars moved the ball 39 yards for their first touchdown making the score 12-10. Spartan Leo Lopez returned the kickoff 29 yards to Union’s 42 yard line. After five plays, Daevon Coles ran 12 yards for a Spartan touchdown, with 1:32 remaining in the third quarter, making the score 18-10. On the last play of the third quarter, the Cougars tied the game at 18, when Tramel Jones made a 41-yard touchdown followed by a Cougar two point conversion.

With no scoring in the fourth quarter the game was tied, pushing it into overtime. With the Cougars taking offense first, they managed a field goal. The Spartans went nowhere in their first three downs, then on 4th down, they ran it in making the score 24-21 - Spartans win!
