At-a-glance

Short Story: Alone

I kept moving along the muddy ground. The sun began to set, and the dark clouds were close by. I had no idea how to get back to camp. I was sent out to gather some firewood, and I lost my way. I’ve felt like I’ve been walking in circles. I knew that they would be coming as soon as the sun was gone.

Every night, vicious mutants come from their hiding places, and stalk the area until dawn. It’s been about 3 months since the outbreak started and all of this began happening. The beasts look for anyone they can get, humans or other animals. I’ve seen friends of mine get eaten… one by one… their flesh eaten and their bones cracked. We used to be a group of 20 survivors, now we’re down to 5. I feared I was the next to go.

The sun was nearly gone now, and I began to grip my pistol. I left my stronger weapons back at camp because I never thought I would get lost. I kept walking, trying not to make any movement. I heard something ahead, a rustle in the bushes nearby. I pulled out my pistol now and held it with both hands. I crouched and focused my eyes on the bushes, ignoring everything around me. I started to get on my belly and moved closer to the bush. I saw a shadow peak up out of the bushes, and something was dripping from its mouth. I aimed my weapon at the head, and shot twice. The being fell to the ground. I knew more of them would be coming back.

I had to come up with a plan, and fast. I walked over to the beast; it was feasting on a dead deer. I quickly grabbed a nearby stick on the ground and began to sharpen it with another stick, making a small wooden spear. I moved the stick closer to the beast and stabbed it through his skin, and it began to leak blood. I took some and rubbed it on my body. Now I would smell like them, so if I ran into any they might think I was one of them and walk past me.

Now that I smelled like them, I continued to walk through the woods, hoping to find my friends. The sun was gone now, and I heard a thunderous boom in the distance. After a few minutes of walking, I saw 3 of them standing by one another. They looked over at me, as If they saw me coming from a mile away. They didn’t attack me, so I walked closer to them. As I got within a few feet from them, they looked at me funny. I walked along until I was out of sight. I didn’t think it would work.

The thunder got louder, and it began to drizzle a little bit. The blood began to wash off of my clothing. So much for that… I hear a roar in the distance, fading into the darkness. I started to sprint, mud flying in the air. I had no idea where I was going, I just needed to get out of this place, or at least find my friends. I heard another roar. It was much louder than last time. I turned around and saw one right in front of me. It tackled me to the ground, it’s teeth gnashing as it snarled. I used all my strength and shoved it off of me. I continued to run, faster and faster until I couldn’t run anymore.

I needed to breathe and take a break, but I knew more were coming…
