“I was a conductor for the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can’t say - I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.” This is one of the many famous quotes spoken by Underground Railroad conductor, Harriet Tubman.

Harriet Tubman’s birth name was Araminta Ross, but she later adopted her mother’s first name, Harriet. She suffered many hardships as a child, including the loss of three of her sisters to slavery. She was also struck on the head with an iron weight.  Although the impact did not kill her, it left her with side effects, along with a permanent dent in her head.

Through all of these trials and tribulations, Harriet Tubman still managed to persevere. She was a woman fortunate enough to escape the bonds of slavery, and once she escaped, she did not turn her back on her people. Harriet Tubman became a leading abolitionist and an Underground Railroad conductor. She helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom, and she never lost a passenger on her trips; Harriet Tubman was truly a woman who made a difference in history.
