Cavalier Chronicle Reporter Colin Kelley sat down with Student body President Senior Doug Dion and Vice president junior Emily Cram to discuss the Student Government’s Plans for the current school year.
As student body president/vice president what are your responsibilities?
Doug: Along with having the job of speaking at each assembly I preside over student council meetings. Also a new responsibility I have is meeting with the principal, Mr. Kelley, a few times a month before school at 6:30 to discuss the needs of the student body such as the changes in senior privileges, such as not being out in the halls during their free periods.
Emily: If Doug is not at a student council meeting it is my responsibility to run it. I also make sure there is communication between classes on topics such as fundraising, and other activities.
Have either of you held any other positions in student government?
Doug: Last year, my junior year, I was class treasurer.
Emily: I was vice president of the sophomore class last year, and a class officer my freshman year.
Doug, How has you year been so far as president?
It has been going well. We have had 2 meetings (as of 9/14), and we have been discussing activities for the upcoming year, such as pep rally, fundraising, old home days, and Apple Fest. Also we have been discussing changes in policy, such as the cafeteria being closed until lunch, and enforcing only water to drink in classrooms after first period. These issues are discussed with all the class officers, as well as our principal Mr. Kelley.
Emily, this is HBHS’ First year having a student body vice president, how did you land the new position?
I was the only junior who ran for student body president last spring, and some of the officers thought it would be a good idea to have a number two position to the student council president.
Have the students given you any recommendations/ suggestions for events or activities?
Doug: Not yet, but any member of the student body know that if they have any suggestions they can let me or any of their class officers know their idea, suggestion, or even complaint, and it will be brought to the table during our meetings.
In the long term what do you both hope to accomplish as student body president?
Doug: I hope to have a successful year governing the students. I’d also like to continue traditional activities, such as pep rally, prom, and field day.
Emily: This year I want to emphasize school unity between all classes and faculty, and hope to accomplish this by the time I am a senior.
