Junior Sarah Jacoby is a one- woman team as the only member of HBHS’s gymnastics team. The season started in December and includes four meets. She competed in the state championship meet last weekend, placing third in the state.
The coach for the HB gymnastics team is Ray Schumacher. Schumacher is also Jacoby’s club coach. “He is an awesome coach,” she proclaims. He has been her coach for 10 years and knows Jacoby very well.
Ever since she was six, Jacoby has been in gymnastics and loves every minute of it. “When I was little I had a ton of energy, and I was bouncing off the walls all the time.” Jacoby’s mother wanted her daughter to get rid of all of that energy, so she signed Sarah up for gymnastics. Gymnastics Village, being close to her house, was the perfect spot for Jacoby to start her gymnastic career. Her biggest role model in her career is her teammate Kay. “She always works so hard but is very funny at the same time. She knows when to be serious and when to have a good time,” Jacoby says.
She competes in all four events including the vault, bars, balance beam and floor routines. The bars are her favorite event. Jacoby has traveled all over the country and competed in many meets. Freshman year she finished all around, while finishing in first on bars and beams at the USAG state meet for level 9. Last year Jacoby flew to Florida for the level 9 Eastern Nationals. She finished very well coming in 27th overall out of more than 100 people.
After high school, Jacoby is looking to go to college. She is hoping she can get a gymnastics scholarship. A couple of colleges have come to her gym to watch, although they can’t officially talk to her until her senior year of high school. What ever college Jacoby chooses to go to they will certainly have a great talent on their hands.
