At-a-glance

The dim lights. The murals of typical Mexican scenes. The hanging sombreros and carvings. The quiet sounds of popular Mexican music filling the air.  This is El Charro’s, Fraser’s hometown Mexican restaurant.  I recently ate at this wonderful establishment and I must say I was quite impressed.  While offering traditional Mexican fare such as tacos, enchiladas, and burritos, there is still a section of the menu for the less adventurous clientele, offering burgers and other American food.

IF YOU GO

El Charro’s

Where: 16720 14 Mile Road (West of Garfield)

Hours: Monday – Thursday 11:00am – 10:00pm, Friday & Saturday 11:00am – 11:00pm, Sunday Noon – 9:30pm

Call: (586)-294-3520

Fares and fees: Dinners average around $9 to $10; drinks $2 to $3

Wait for food: About ten minutes

Ambiance:  The walls surrounding the building and the style of the building itself give the feel of an old Mexican structure.  Inside you are greeted by a large fish tank filled with colorful fish (and one eel) as well as a large fireplace in the main dining room which provides not only great atmosphere and lighting, but a warm place to eat in the cold winter months.

Chow down: I ordered the Enchilada Dinner ($10.95), and a Coca Cola ($2.25).

How was it?: The Enchilada Dinner includes three ground beef enchiladas covered in chili and melted cheese with a side of Spanish rice and refried beans that round out this fantastic meal.  That, along with the basket of nacho chips and salsa at every table was more than enough food for me, giving me two meals for the price of one.

Service: The service was very good.  Despite being packed full we were seated quickly and our order was taken within five minutes by a very kind waitress.

What I’ll try next time:  On my next visit, I plan on ordering some of El Charro’s famous “Unique soft shell tacos”, or maybe their Mexican Style Steak.

Final Verdict: El Charro’s provides a great Mexican meal at a price that won’t break the bank.
