For the past decade, schools, parents, and students have been in disagreement over the issue of school uniforms. The question still remains, are uniforms really needed at school?
Uniforms are not needed at school because it makes us spend more money on uniforms rather then buying clothes we can wear outside of school. Most people think uniforms should not be worn at school because they are boring and can arguably make us look weird. We should be able to dress freely because it is a free country. It is also bad for us to spend money on uniforms when we already have clothes that we can wear.
“Uniforms are needed to help stop discrimination of students due to their socioeconomic standing,” said Read 180 teacher Deborah Schnell.
Students don’t like uniforms because they have to wear the same thing every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Some people feel that if we don’t have uniforms, students will discriminate against others. Teachers think we should wear uniforms because they feel like we might get distracted in class when we don’t wear them. I, on the other hand, feel that we are mature enough to not wear uniforms.
“Uniforms are good for training kid’s work ethic and work attire,” said campus supervisor Bobby Hamilton.
The school should take away uniforms for a while and see how it goes. If it goes well, Principle Solina should think about not having uniforms. If it goes bad, they should just keep the dress policy the way it was before. That way, students can have the chance to show that they are responsible enough to be able to wear what they want.
“I don’t think it’s fair to have uniforms at school because we have to wear uniforms and in other schools they don’t have to wear them,” said sixth grade student Fransico Sauceda.
Uniforms inhibit students’ freedom of rights. As you can see, many students are starting to rebel against uniforms. They are altering them as much as possible. For example, they are wearing tight uniform clothing or shirts under the uniforms that can visibly be seen. With the amount of uniform violations occuring, uniforms can actually create more disciplinary problems than be good for the school.
