Art Sanchez, or as the students know him, Mr. Art, is the building manager here at Langston Hughes Academy.
Sanchez was born in Oakland, California, and was raised by his grandmother. His grandmother could not speak English, so his first language was Spanish. School was difficult for him due to the language barrier, but he was able to get an education from Columbus Elementary in Berkeley. Education helped him become a better communicator, have good work ethics, helped him set goals in life and become organized. Sanchez went to Berkeley High, Laney College in Oakland, and Delta College.
In December of 2008, Sanchez started working at Langston Hughes Academy as a building manager. He chose to work at this school because it provided a decent living with employee benefits.
“I love Langston Hughes Academy because it is a great school with great supporting staff, teachers, students, and a great principal,” said Sanchez. “It feels good to be building manager because I know it is a lot of responsibility. It allows me to build relationships with teachers and students.”
As building manager Sanchez has to train the new recruits that come to the school.
“It is an ongoing process. I train them when they first come in and they learn as they go. I enjoy that part,” commented Sanchez.
Sanchez was able to overcome the challenges he faced growing up to become Langston Hughes Academy’s building manager.
