Can you imagine being on the road day after day? Singing night after night with your sister? Encouraging the discouraged? Helping lost souls find a loving God who cares for them?
Can you imagine making it all the way to Los Angeles, Calif., and winning the television game show "The Price Is Right?" Brenda Denney of Oak Grove, Ark., had done exactly this.
Denney is the lead singer for the southern gospel group "2nd Generation." Denney is accompanied on the road by her sister, Elaine Robinson. They were raised in the ministry and were known as "The Singing Greens" with their brothers and parents while growing up.
The sisters have had the gift of ministry since they were young, and they travel across the country singing at churches of all denominations. They all sing at conventions, on cruises, and at many, many other vocal events.
When asked about southern gospel music, Denney said, "You know who you’re singing to, and who you’re singing about."
Denney said, "Southern Gospel Music to me means hearing a song that talks about the blood, the cross, and the Bible."
“2nd Generation” started singing full time in 2005. Since then, the group has had many charted songs, such as "Hanging on a Nail," "When He Chose Me," "Feel the Joy," "I'll Not Fear the Crossing," "The Blood Covered It All," and their most recent hit, "Dust on the Alter."
When Denney was asked of her singing group’s success, she said, "We give all the credit to God!"
But Denney’s fame has not been soley from her singing carrer, she has also appeared on the television game show "The Price Is Right." The show aired on Wednesday, January 25.
Denney's three children live in Los Angeles, Calif., and she was going to visit them for the Thanksgiving holiday. While there, her son had gotten tickets for them to go to the show. "At that moment I claimed that I was going to be a contestant and win the show," Denney said.
What an exciting moment it was, when Denney's name was called onto the stage. Denney said she felt comfortable on the stage, and things worked out perfectly in the show, as she completed the tasks needed to win.
But what amazed her most was the game "Master Key Game."
"If anyone knows us, they know our song "Hanging on a Nail," Denney said. It was so unbelievable how the center key really won the "Master Key Game" for her. When the key went in, the bells whistled and she knew she had FAVOR!
Denney explained that FAVOR is a big thing for “2nd Generation.” Several years ago the group had sweatshirts made that said "FOG," standing for "Favor of God!" Denney said, "And that’s exactly what I claimed. FAVOR!" she said with a laugh, "The sweatshirts are going to be number-one sellers now."
Since the show aired several weeks ago, it has been "crazy," according to Denney. "People have been Googling ‘2nd Generation.’ The phones have been ringing off the hook. E-mails and Facebook messages have been coming in daily too," she said.
Many new things are coming for “2nd Generation.” They have a new album that will be coming out, and they have a new singer joining the group soon. Brenda Denney and “2nd Generation” are the talk of the country right now in Southern Gospel music.
