Do you like Coke, Pepsi, or can you not taste a difference?  With some people, they have a favorite but aren’t sure which one it is.  Either way, the two soft drinks are very similar.  So what’s the difference?  There is the obvious, different colored cans; and the not so obvious, like the different carbonation levels and amount of artificial sweeteners.

Pepsi, also known as Pepsi Cola or “Brad’s Drink” was created by Caleb Bradham.  The name Pepsi Cola came from the enzyme pepsin and kola nut used in its recipe.  During the Great Depression, Pepsi Cola went bankrupt and was resold twice.  Charles Guth, president of Loft Inc.  (A candy manufacturer) bought the Pepsi Cola Company because he wanted to replace Coca-Cola outside of his stores after Coke had refused to discount him on their syrup.  Over the years, Coca-Cola was offered the opportunity to buy the Pepsi Cola Company, three times; and each time refused.

The Coca-Cola formula was created in the Eagle Drug and Chemical Company.  At one point, there were two other Coca-Cola recipes being distributed under the names of Yum Yum and Kola.  Neither of which caught on.  These days, Coca-Cola concentrate and Coke syrup is being sold as an over-the-counter remedy for nausea and mildly upset stomach.

You may have noticed that Pepsi has a slightly sweeter flavor than Coke does.  Also, coke has a higher carbonation level; it’s fizzier when you take the first sip, but that fizz goes away quickly making Coke the smoother soft drink.  Overtime, Pepsi’s flavor strengthens the more it sits where Cokes becomes watery and bitter.

There is no right or wrong soft drink; it’s all about personal preference.  When you’re craving a fizzy soda, go for the Coke.  But when you really want a sweet soft drink that will last longer, reach for that Pepsi and enjoy!
