RAINN is an orginization for rape vicitms
Statistics say that teens between the ages of 16 and 19 are 3 1/2 times as likely to undergo rape or other forms of sexual assault than the rest of the general population. It's funny, on TV today we see ad's on how "not to be another teen statistic". We have orginizations against teen drug use, we have orginizations to fight teen pregnancy, we have classes and religious organizations developed solely to keep us out of these lines of fire, but what about the victims? There are so many classes telling teenagers not to get involved with things like drugs and sex which make their students feel persecuted right then and there under the assumptions that we all make the same decisions. What about things we don't get to decide? I have seen plenty of courses teaching us to avoid temptations, but what about a self defense course? What about issuing out pepper spray as well as condoms? According to RAINN 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18 and 80% are under the age of 30. Teaching this does not only benefit the female sex, it also benefits the male sex. In 1995, 32,130 males above the age of 12 reported having been raped. Males make up 10% of rape victims. There are so many rapes for that go unreported for both sexes. There is also the issue of how high school students fit in among their peers after being raped. We have so many support groups, groups for youth leadership such as Strong Young Men or Women of Character. We have the GSA (the Gay Straight Alliance) and many other sexuality based groups. 1 in 10 people are gay, 1 in every 5 people is a rape victim. Only 42 percent of rapes are reported. Yes, there are support groups, but most of these focus around adult women. We must acknowledge the growing statistic of youth rape victims. These victims need to realize that they are not alone, and understand that they have peers undergoing similar obstacles.
