When you look at a picture of the golf team, you will see a whole bunch of guys in collared shirts smiling. When you look a little closer, you will notice that there is also one girl on the team: junior Dani Gold.
Gold is the only female player on the QOHS golf team. She started playing golf in the third grade and made the team by beating some of the boys during tryouts. “[When I was younger] I played on and off for a couple of years, but I gave it up until the summer of my sophomore year. I was too young to have the patience that I needed,” said Gold.
But now Gold has become one of the leaders on the golf team. “She works hard and always tries her best. She’s cool…we like having her on the team,” said senior team captain Alex Chiang.
Golf is a sport that requires much practice and technique, and so to perfect their skills the golf team gets together two to three times a week to play holes together. On top of these practices Gold plays on the weekends or in her spare time during the week. Gold visits the driving range often and even has her own golf professional whom she trains with.
Gold likes playing with guys because it helps her to improve her game. Gold said, “As far as the team goes I usually have the highest score, so I have a lot of learning to do from the better players…I’m definitely jealous because [the guys] can all hit the ball farther than me!”
Gold’s favorite thing about golf is “the fact that it is about doing your personal best and that you can not blame someone else for a bad score.” Gold also said, “It’s all up to you to beat your best score…although when you shoot lower than your competitors it’s a big plus!”
Gold recently competed in the district tournament and qualified for the state tournament. Golfers had to shoot a score of 102 or better on 18 holes. Gold now gets to compete at the University of Maryland on October 22 against the top female golfers in the state.
