Silence. No phone calls, movie plans or heart shaped chocolates for some love-sick loners on Valentine’s Day. But, maybe sometimes a dateless night is better than a night full of awkward moments.

A sneaky hand over a shoulder or a coy comment meant to make your date laugh always has the small chance of exploding into a hideous disaster. Daters beware – not all dates are perfect.

Even from the very beginning, a relationship can start out rocky. With one simple glance everything can change. And with one indecisive answer everything can go horribly wrong. Senior Kate Morton knows first hand how frustrating this situation can be. “I asked [my first boyfriend] out and he said, ‘Hmm, I’ll think about it,’” Morton stated.

Magically romantic movie moments do not always occur in real life high school dating. Despite what The CW may show on television, teenagers in love do not always act as romantic or rational as OC characters.

Senior Stuart Dederer went through a breakup last year, which put him in a somewhat nostalgic state of mind. “I was really hurt and I wanted to call someone and talk about it. So I looked in the phone book and called someone that I haven’t talked to since fifth grade,” Dederer said.

Hesitant conversations and awkward silences are likely to occur on the first date, but some couples never get past that stage. Some spend the whole night avoiding eye contact and stuffing their mouths with food to avoid saying something stupid.

But every once in a while, to fill the silence, something may slip out of your mouth, and nothing is worse than a cheesy pick-up line. Senior Audrey Morrow encountered this awkward situation while hanging out with friends. “[My friend] turned to me and said, ‘The floor is dirty, you can sit on my lap,’” Morrow stated.

Although some first dates do not always turn out as flawless as couples hope, if the couple can stick it out through an uncomfortable date, who knows? The second date could be a hit!
