Pueblo City Schools was put to the test with the new block schedule that had been talked about for more than a year.
The block schedule was adopted to personalize the learning environment at the high school level.
The block is a type of academic schedule where students have less number of classes each day and remain in class for a longer period of time reducing time switching classes.
With this schedule, it provides more time in the classroom, and uninterrupted experiences in class, and more time to focus on a subject and increase teacher-student interaction.
The block schedule is very similar to how most college and university class schedules are set-up.
According to Principal Fred Trujillo, “Its been a good challenge for staff and students. Teachers need to adjust to their teaching methods and to reflex their added time. Students had to get use to being in class for 90 minutes.”
With this schedule, you will have a whole lessons worth of learning in just one day.
And, with this, there is less time for lunch, only having 30 minutes for lunch because of how the classes are set up.
Each subject is completed in one semester.
Central High Senior Jerek Fabjancic said “I dislike the block schedule, I think we should go back to the regular 7 classes a day,”
However some have expressed concern over whether the focus on one set of subjects in the first semester and another set of subjects in the second semester leave too large of a gap between each subject.
For example, a student takes Algebra in the first semester however they will not have an opportunity to take their next level math class until the first semester of the following year.
According to Breanna Cordova Central Sophomore she stated, “I think its going to be hard to get use to but its going to be good for me in the long run.
Will students retain all of the important information needed to progress to the next level class in this block schedule, where in the old schedule their next level class would have been taken the very next semester.
It is unknown how the results of the block schedule will be measured and when.
So until then, Central High administrators, teachers and students will continue to adjust to the new schedule and hope that results will academically benefit the student.
