Whether you’re a morning person, or not, staff and students in Pueblo City Schools had to adjust to the “no late start Wednesday.”

For several years the students in all the high schools have been used to having a late start on Wednesdays. Instead of going in at 7:45, students didn’t have to be there until 9:00 am. But this school year the late starts have been eliminated.

Every morning, Monday through Friday, students have to be in class by 7:30. But, there is one advantage, on Fridays instead of getting out at 2:45 pm, students are released at 12:30. Unless they want to eat lunch, and after they eat they can leave.

One of the counselors at Central, Peggy Armijo, definitely favors the early release. With a smile, Armijo said, “I hope the no late start will continue, I think the benefits are the positive results.”

Some of the expectations of the “no late start/early release” are that students are expected to be in school on time. There should be fewer tardies with the consistency of early starts and there should be a large sum of reduced absences.

It was not on the school’s level to authority the “no late start” it was a directive from the school’s administration.

One student, Edward Posa, a junior at Central High School, preferred the late start. Posa stated “I would rather come in late then get out early.” Posa has been at Central since his freshman year.

A parent of two present Central students, Laura Mondragon also prefers the early release. Mondragon says, “It provides for an early weekend. It allows us to make doctor appointments on Friday afternoons, to prevent missing school, and it provides more consistency throughout the week.”

Armijo mentioned “If the students remain to come to school on time, the early release will continue. If large amounts of absences occur then students will not have a late start or early release.”
