Thursday, December 1, 2005 Bullock Creek High School students showed their support for not only breast cancer awareness, but to math teacher, Mrs. Susan Doud by wearing pink ribbons distributed throughout the hallways before first hour and making donations.

During lunch hours students were given the opportunity to purchase “Breast Cancer Awareness” items, including bandanas, wristbands, teddy bears, and ball hats. All profits are to be donated to Mrs. Doud and the cost of her surgery, as well as to help out her family.

“Students have been very supportive. If they buy something and need change, they always leave it as donations. They all know this is for a good cause,” explains senior Becky Stern. Stern is just one of several students involved with advertising the acceptance of donations. She adds, “Personally, I think the school should get involved because she’s one of our teachers and it [helping] is just a great thing to do.”

“I’m buying stuff to help Mrs. Doud pay her bills. It’s something to show support to someone. It’s sad when things like this happen in someone’s life, and it’s good to help,” agrees Jessica Dryzga, senior. Aleah Pavilcek adds, “Mrs. Doud is one of the nicest women I have ever met.”

“I’m seeing them [wristbands] this week. It’s kind of a constant reminder. It’s nice to see students showing support,” explains Mrs. Poole.

Students will continue showing their support throughout the next few months while Mrs. Doud progresses in chemotherapy. Each month, a designated day will be set aside to wear a “Breast Cancer Awareness” wristband and “share the care.” Students and staff will also participate in days such as “Hat Day.”
