Cultural diversity has always been celebrated at Wootton. In that spirit, on April 21 the Hindu Culture Club hosted a school-wide event to celebrate their culture. The club is composed of anyone interested in the Hindu culture.

A video about Hindu culture was featured on the morning announcements. The wearing of traditional sari wraps was demonstrated and glass cases were donated for the art department to display Hindu artwork featuring gods, clothing and more.

“This was a joint project at the beginning of the year,” Mr. Ike Onley, club leader and English teacher said.

“The Hindu club wanted something to highlight who they were…we wanted to do something to celebrate Hindu culture and impress upon the school and students what Hindu culture is.”

All day the club hosted musical presentations and cultural demonstrations in the commons and sold Traditional Indian food.

“[We did] an informal dance to a Hindu [pop] song,” sophomore Sabrina Khan said of her group that performed at the event. “[To prepare we had to] practice, practice, practice.”

“The festival was going to be for a week, but we decided to put most of our efforts into one day,” Onley said. “We want to work with [all types of] classes to show how Hindu culture effects everyone.”

The club had the English department use Hindu poetry for warm-ups in their classes and an ethnic video was shown.

Club leaders Dipika Mouli and Swathi Raman worked hard to make the special event possible.

“I [oversaw] the event,” Mouli said. “We split up into committees and I [made] sure [they were] running.”
